Bitcoin 11 Years - Achievements, Lies, and Bullshit Claims So Far - Tooootally NOT a SCAM !!!!

That's right folks, it's that time again for the annual review of how Bitcoin is going: all of those claims, predictions, promises .... how many have turned out to be true, and how many are completely bogus ???
Please post / link this on Bitcoin (I am banned there for speaking the truth, so I cannot do it) ... because it'a way past time those poor clueless mushrooms were exposed to the truth.
Anyway, without further ado, I give you the Bitcoin's Achievements, Lies, and Bullshit Claims So Far ...
.
Bitcoin Achievements so far:
  1. It has spawned a cesspool of scams (2000+ shit coin scams, plus 100's of other scams, frauds, cons).
  2. Many 1,000's of hacks, thefts, losses.
  3. Illegal Use Cases: illegal drugs, illegal weapons, tax fraud, money laundering, sex trafficking, child pornography, hit men / murder-for-hire, ransomware, blackmail, extortion, and various other kinds of fraud and illicit activity.
  4. Legal Use Cases: Steam Games, Reddit, Expedia, Stripe, Starbucks, 1000's of merchants, cryptocurrency conferences, Ummm ????? The few merchants who "accept Bitcoin" immediately convert it into FIAT after the sale, or require you to sell your coins to BitPay or Coinbase for real money, and will then take that money. Some of the few who actually accept bitcoin haven't seen a customer who needed to pay with bitcoin for the last six months, and their cashiers no longer know how to handle that.
  5. Contributing significantly to Global Warming.
  6. Wastes vasts amounts of electricity on useless, do nothing work.
  7. Exponentially raises electricity prices when big miners move into regions where electricity was cheap.
  8. It’s the first "currency" that is not self-sustainable. It operates at a net loss, and requires continuous outside capital to replace the capital removed by miners to pay their costs. It’s literally a "black hole currency."
  9. It created a new way for people living too far from Vegas to gamble all their life savings away.
  10. Spawned "blockchain technology", a powerful technique that lets incompetent programmers who know almost nothing about databases, finance, programming, or blockchain scam millions out of gullible VC investors, banks, and governments.
  11. Increased China's foreign trade balance by a couple billion dollars per year.
  12. Helped the FBI and other law enforcement agents easily track down hundreds of drug traffickers and drug users.
  13. Wasted thousands if not millions of man-hours of government employees and legislators, in mostly fruitless attempts to understand, legitimize, and regulate the "phenomenon", and to investigate and prosecute its scams.
  14. Rekindled the hopes of anarcho-capitalists and libertarians for a global economic collapse, that would finally bring forth their Mad Max "utopia".
  15. Added another character to Unicode (no, no, not the "poo" 💩 character ... that was my first guess as well 🤣)
  16. Provides an easy way for malware and ransomware criminals to ply their trade and extort hospitals, schools, local councils, businesses, utilities, as well as the general population.
.
Correct Predictions:
  1. 2015-12: "1,000 dollar in 2015", u/Luka_Magnotta, aka time traveler from the future, 31-Aug-2013, https://www.reddit.com/Bitcoin/comments/1lfobc/i_am_a_timetraveler_from_the_future_here_to_beg/ (Technically, this prediction is WRONG because the highest price reached in 2015 was $495.56 according to CMC. Yes, Bitcoin reached $1,000 in 2013 and 2014, but that's NOT what the prediction says).
  2. 2017-12: "10,000 in 2017", u/Luka_Magnotta, aka time traveler from the future, 31-Aug-2013, https://www.reddit.com/Bitcoin/comments/1lfobc/i_am_a_timetraveler_from_the_future_here_to_beg/
  3. 2018-04: $10,000 (by April 2018), Mike Novogratz, link #1: https://www.bitcoinprice.com/predictions/, link #2: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-21/mike-novogratz-says-bitcoin-will-end-the-year-at-10-000

Nikita is slowly boiling the frog...

... figuratively at least. For those who are unfamilliar, it's a fable, the premise of which is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.
It's like the 45th law of power: Preach the need to change, but never reform too much at once. If change is necessary, make it feel like a gentle improvement on the past.
The writing is on the wall. It's been said from the beginning - it will only get harder. Now with the Hideout and many survival mechanics in place Nikita is slowly cranking up the heat. He does after all need to think about a stage of the game that will sustain itself without wipes, but needs to gradually build up to it.
Right now, he's just manually fiddling with prices, changing barters, spawn rates and such. He's only getting started and we can make a pretty educated guess what will come next.
I think what Nikita is going for is a sort of reverse S-shaped distribution where the mid tier stuff is king, meta's are essentially unviable to run consistently, interrupted with periods of boom and bust. Where endgame will be a state that you have to maintain rather than a stage that you get to. You'll be less inclinded to min max value per slot but rather compromise what is actually needed and looting itself will be shifted from insta selling to the highest bidder but rather retaining what you found.
I might be right I might be wrong, but hey.... that's just a theory, a gaaaame theory.

[Request] Escape from Tarkov [EU] - 2nd try

Hello!
I've tried to request this game a few days ago but sadly didn't have any luck. While i kept my post relatively simple and short it actually got a few upvotes which i haven't seen that often for requests in the past, and since i really still want EFT to be the sole purpose in my life, i thought i'd try one more time.
Here is the link to my previous post if anyone cares: https://www.reddit.com/GiftofGames/comments/evdtro/request_escape_from_tarkov_eu/
This time, while everything obvious had been stated already in the old thread, i am going to provide a little bit more in-depth information about the game itself - maybe there are some people out here who don't know this game yet but might actually fall in love with it as much as i did.
So let's begin..
What is Escape from Tarkov?
Escape from Tarkov, or in short EFT, is a very realistic military simulation in the russian city of Tarkov amidst the fictional region of Norvinsk. The city, thriving under the influence of international companies, quickly became of interest for all kinds of shady business which ultimately lead to a sort-of civil war with several factions being a part of it, including the UN Peace corps as well as two PMC factions. The whole area got locked down and whoever wasn't able to evacuate just had to survive on his own.
You as a player create a character upon first entering the game; either on behalf of the USEC, a mercenary company hired by Terra Group which is one of the mentioned companies that work in the area in whatevery way that may be, or the by the Russian government ordered BEAR faction, who are here to uncover the involvement of said Terra Group into any shady stuff going on. (Right now as far as i am aware there is no real difference aside from "clothing choices" between those factions. That said there are special skills planned which are unique to each faction and potentially more)
How does EFT work?
The game is being played in instanced map areas inside the city of Tarkov.
Some areas might need special equipment to be accessed fully, which you might have to buy first or find in another area with a little bit of luck. You choose one of the areas and then join into an area which is filled with a lot of AI PVE enemies, but also a specific amount of player characters. You then have a fixed amount of time on the chosen map - by the end of it you have to reach an extraction point, or you basically are MIA. If you are able to extract, everything that you carry extracts out of the "raid" which you then are able to move over to your stash. From here you can reequip your main character and join into another raid. Decide for yourself if you want to go fully geared with the heaviest armor and the biggest guns you own, or jump in just with a crowbar and hope for the best.
Health and Recovery
The health system in EFT is pretty insane. Not only does it feature limb dependant damage, it also has loads of different status effects, may they be positive or negative. A big amount of health items to counter specific effects and to heal your wounds while in a raid. And trust me, you'll need every option available to recover your health (or limbs :D)
After a raid is over your character might have to recover, but you also can just speed up his heal using those health items. But if your character might have to recover, there is also an alternate option - to play as a SCAV!
Scav's!
Short for Scavenger, these guys make out the majority of the AI enemies you will encounter in EFT. They're mostly badly equipped NPC's running around and shooting player characters. But beware, there are improved versions as well as Scav bosses on specivic maps which not only are sometimes very hard to kill(a) but also will literally fuck you up like there is no tomorrow. But if you're able to kill those guys they might drop very decent weaponary or even very expensive items such as keys, keycards or similar!
Interestingly enough however, if your main character should become unable to be used due to recovery, or you just want to have some quick fun, you can join any raid as a scav yourself. You'll get thrown into a chosen raid with random gear, but you will have no skills or level benefits. At the end, should you be able to extract at some of the scav specific extraction points you will be able to keep whatever you found for your main character - but your won't get any experience of course.
Also, other scav NPC's treat you as a friendly while you're playing as a scav! This can be very helpful while trying to fight player main characters. But of course your are free to just kill other scav's, but beware - doing so will make them hostile to you immediately!
EFT is as much shooter sim as it is RPG
As i've said, EFT is a military simulation. At the same time however, it is also an RPG to a certain degree since your main character has a vast set of skills that you can train while using those skills. Unlike a lot of other games where you just rack up ability points to spend after leveling up, here you gain experience in a specific skill by using said skill.
Your health skill, as an example, is increased working on your character's strength, endurance or vitality. An increased level in health provides you with bonusses to regeneration outside of raids, lowered energy consumption or dehydration rate as well as a decreased chance for fractures.
Vitality is being skilled by taking damage and bloodloss, while a mental skill such as Perception would be trained by looting items.
As soon as you max out one of these skills you'll gain an elite level perk which has some unique passive ability. To go into more detail here however would just be too much.
Experience is a big factor. You have an experience bar just as in any other RPG. When you finish a raid, depending on it's outcome, you'll gain experience. For kills, loot or objectives you have finished from the pretty big quest system. You level your character's main level which in turn opens up the possibility of better items at one of the trade vendors which i will talk more about in a minute.
Trade and Hideout
The game features an auction-house where you can list your items that then can be bought by other players, but there are also "NPC" traders available with different backgrounds and focus. While one guy is an arms dealer by trait, another lives in the woods and is more of a hunter. A doctor specializes in medical items and a Fence where (afaik) you can buy items other players sold here, which might mean items that are locked for your current level to be bought at other traders.
Traders start out on Lvl1 but with more reputation by completing their quests in raids, higher level and lots of money spent in their shops, you'll be able to unlock better and better tiers of gear to be bought from them.
Very recently the Hideout feature got added to the game, which features a customizable hideout for different kinds of "activities". Those include a shooting range, where you are able to test every weapon and see how it handles, a workbench where you can craft or break down different kinds of items, and that you'll need to modify your weapons. Resting space or a med station provide increased recovery after every raid, a generator provides the Hideout with power and a Bitcoin Farm.. well, it farms Bitcoin that you then can sell to the traders for money. There are even more parts that can be built but i am not going to list them all now.
Phew, i feel like i've written an essay.. I have no idea if this text is actually readable due to it's wall-of-text nature at times, but i hope that someone might read this and this might spark his interest in the game :)
In the end all i can say is thank you for reading! Here is my steam account: https://steamcommunity.com/id/ThePatchelist
If you have any questions feel free to ask them, also feel free to just add me on steam if you want. :)
Thanks!

Welcome to the /Bitcoin Sticky FAQ

You've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
The following videos are a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:
For some more great introductory videos check out Andreas Antonopoulos's YouTube playlists, he is probably the best bitcoin educator out there today. Also have to give mention to James D'Angelo's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard series. Lots of additional video resources can be found at the videos wiki page or /BitcoinTV.
Key properties of bitcoin
Some excellent writing on Bitcoin's value proposition and future can be found here. Bitcoin statistics can be found here, here and here. Developer resources can be found here and here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here. The number of times Bitcoin was declared dead by the media can be found here. Scaling resources here, and of course the whitepaper that started it all.

Note: Bitcoins are valued at whatever market price people are willing to pay for them in balancing act of supply vs demand. Unlike traditional markets, bitcoin markets operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Preev is a useful site that that shows how much various denominations of bitcoin are worth in different currencies. Alternatively you can just Google "1 bitcoin in (your local currency)".

Securing your bitcoins

With bitcoin you can "Be your own bank" and personally secure your bitcoins OR you can use third party companies aka "Bitcoin banks" which will hold the bitcoins for you.

Another interesting use case for physical storage/transfer is the Opendime. Opendime is a small USB stick that allows you to spend Bitcoin by physically passing it along so it's anonymous and tangible like cash.
Note: For increased security, use Two Factor Authentication (2FA) everywhere it is offered, including email!
2FA requires a second confirmation code to access your account, usually from a text message or app, making it much harder for thieves to gain access. Google Authenticator and Authy are the two most popular 2FA services, download links are below. Make sure you create backups of your 2FA codes.

Steam Direct shovelware developers creating fake TF2, DOTA2, and CS:GO items

TL;DR - Do not accept any trade offers until Valve has issued a public statement. Make sure you double-check each item offered in all of your trades to make sure it's from the correct game. Look for warnings about not having played a game for any items offered in a trade. There are multiple reports of brand new Steam games publishing their own (unused) items using Valve's assets and thumbnails - items completely unused even by their own games, intended to look like high-value items from Valve games for the sole purpose of scamming veteran and novice traders alike. Valve has since implemented a warning to identify these previously-impossible-to-spot fakes, which will look like this: https://imgur.com/a/B1BvoMV
These items are NOT from the respective games they appear to be from, and therefore cannot be used. No, that purple-border hat that says it has a "burning flames" effect won't show up in any of your TF2 loadouts. The scammer simply uploaded the thumbnail from a real item into their own game's assets, and copied the description into all their own item's respective fields to look as identical as possible. Again, even though you see that high-value item in your trade window, it isn't real.
Initially, I intended to keep this quiet, in hopes we wouldn't have copycats, so it's admittedly a bit old, but since the original thread (posted on the popular TF2 trading forums Backpack.tf) to my dismay has received widespread attention throughout the community, scammers have taken notice, and other shovelware games have begun following suit.
I myself, along with several other high profile trading community admins, attempted to quietly contact Valve (both groups and individuals) about this over multiple channels including Steam chat and email, but have yet to receive any comment or acknowledgement. Given Valve's longtime stance against curating the Steam Store, and a lack of response to reports about this scam, the method will probably continue increasing in popularity for the foreseeable future. Therefore, you should make sure you know how to protect yourself, because you'll most likely run into it yourself soon.
This is very crafty, but can be caught with some extra due dilligence if you pay really close attention. When inspected in the owner's inventory, or hovered over in a trade window, each item lists what game it is from right below its name, next to an arbitrary icon (which seems to be set by developers and can look like the real game) right here where I've outlined. For comparison, here is what a real item, from its respective game, will look like in a trade offer window if you hover over it. This seems to be the only detail shovelware developers can't change, and it's your one warning that something is wrong before you finalize that trade. Once you commit, the item will be placed in a new, separate inventory tab for the shovelware game, and you won't be able to use it in any other games (or the shovelware one either, considering how these items are generally used). Disregard that. Developers have found a way to change the display name for their items, and fakes are now practically indistinguishable from real items. Your best bet is to stop trading altogether until Valve has issued a public statement with a fix.
If you see a trade offer containing bogus items from a shovelware game, please do the community a favor and report it. Not just the trade offer, but the game itself. To report a game in the Steam Store:
Related crosspost: https://www.reddit.com/GlobalOffensiveTrade/comments/930hro/warningpsa_doublecheck_that_your_csgo_items_o

Update:

The game Abstractism has been removed from the Steam store, and both the developer's and original TF2 scammer's Steam account from the backpack.tf thread have been suspended. However, this post wasn't about any particular developer or scammer, or even to force action from Valve. It was about the fundamental problem with allowing hoardes of developers unfettered access to create their own items for a $100 Steam Direct fee, and how to protect yourself from the consequences. Just because this one shady developer was banned doesn't mean you're safe. The scam method quickly grew in popularity overnight, and will likely continue to circulate until things change. Please, please, please review the instructions above about checking the game each item is from, and reporting games that abuse this.

2nd Update

It seems that I was mistaken, and developers actually can change their app's display name in the trade window. There's no easy way to differentiate fake items anymore. I don't even know what to recommend anymore, except don't trade for the next few months until Valve figures something out.
App in question changed their item display name to "Team Fortress 2", and has already started churning out high-value TF2 items. This "bitcoin miner" app was purchased from someone else (changed publishers) within the last hour or so. Credit to u/antigravities for pointing out the appID changes.

3rd Update

Valve has release a temporary fix for this issue. If you receive an offer containing items from a game you either never played, or is brand new in the Steam store, you'll see a warning about each (2 separate, consecutive warnings) in the trade window. There may be additional fixes coming out within the next few days, but Valve's javascript update for the warnings can be seen here: https://github.com/SteamDatabase/SteamTracking/commit/2dfffae700cd9732691de4ebcc430c15b806a6cb
Additionally, u/Drunken_F00l from Valve has stated that, among other things, Valve will now require approval for app name changes to in-game items. Finally, u/Drunken_F00l commented that victims who were scammed by this method before the warning went live will receive their items back. More updates to this situation are pending.

Welcome to the /Bitcoin Sticky FAQ

You've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
Some great introductions for new users are My first bitcoin, Bitcoin explained and ELI5 Bitcoin. Also, the following videos are a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:
Also have to give mention to Lopp.net, the Princeton crypto series and James D'Angelo's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard series. Some excellent writing on Bitcoin's value proposition and future can be found at the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute. Bitcoin statistics can be found here, here and here. Developer resources can be found here, here and here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here. Potential upcoming protocol improvements here. Scaling resources here. The number of times Bitcoin was declared dead by the media can be found here (LOL!), and of course Satoshi Nakamoto's whitepaper that started it all! :)

2018 was beyond awful. Here is my case for a better 2019.

The bears’ narrative is running out of steam at this point. Crypto is not dead, and the fundamentals have never been stronger. There was a huge spike of volume that has been sustained for weeks now, so at least for now, it seems we have a trend reversal. The way the volume poured in and remained is nothing like the faux 6k bottom. While we may test the lows again, I think we have either bottomed or gotten super close to it. We still have to show strength for the next few months by bouncing back from any bearish movements, but overall, it seems that the worst is over.
The good news is that most of the charlatans in the space have been ruined, and even if some of the legit projects also went under, the survivors will be just that much more resilient. 2019 will be the year that the space begins to mature. Things I am exited about:
  1. Improvements to Bitcoin fungibility and the growth of the lightning network.
  2. MKRDAO continuing to improve its DAI stablecoin through multi-asset collateralization.
  3. Tokenizing real estate on the blockchain — I’ve always wanted a piece of NYC real estate, and now I will be able to do just that.
  4. Financialization dapps. Very interested in mkr, compound, dharma, nexus mutual, bancor, and team just. I’m hoping Augur can grow some more, and Gnosis also is interesting.
  5. Improvements into Ethereum. Granted it may not happen in 2019, but Eth moving to PoS is super exciting. I picked up a bunch of eth when it was on super sale two weeks ago so I could run a staking node. In addition to getting Serenity up, Plasma chains, PoA chains, and Raiden network will all help with scaling Ethereum.
  6. Competing dapp platforms. Tron has been a pleasant surprise and I’d love to see what other platforms can bring to the table to compete with Eth.
  7. A plethora of stable coins trying different models. From regulated fiat backed tokens like GUSD/USDC, decentralized crypto collateralized DAI, and Haven Protocol’s XHV private off shore banking stablecoin experiment. Once merchants and suppliers can get payments using stablecoins, the money that goes into crypto will stay in crypto, reducing selling pressure.
  8. Security tokens. It would be super cool if a Fortune 500 company decided to tokenize its stock.
  9. Regulatory clarity. Encouraging bipartisan regulations were introduced to congress that could make a better ecosystem for traders and users and encourage more innovation from USA.
  10. Games. Loom is going to release their crypto zombie game, God’s Unchained will be released, and several more games are aiming for release. If people get these kinds of assets through smart phone apps, it offers a gateway to crypto that could even onboard people oblivious to cryptocurrency/blockchain.
